"Intel's quad-core Core i5 2.66 GHz processor based on the Lynnfield core, was tested on an Intel reference-design P55 motherboard (DIBX_CRB) by forum members of XFastest. The processor accompanies 2.80 GHz and 2.93 GHz variants higher up in the series, and is expected to be priced at US $196.

The test bed was put through 3DMark Vantage (Performance and eXtreme settings), Cinebench R10, Queen, Photoworxx and AES tests of Everest. The GPU is of little relevance, as the CPU test 1 is what is to be looked at. At Queen, the setup with 4 cores and HyperThreading enabled, edged a dual-Xeon L5320 (8 cores) setup. It proved to be roughly 25% faster than Core 2 Extreme QX9650 at Photoworxx, and scored marginally higher than it AES. More pictures of the motherboard at the source."

It's pretty crappy that the i5 doesn't share the same socket as the i7. Makes it even harder to switch between the two for whatever reason. :nonono2:

I hope intel actually adds more kinds of CPU's to share the same socket as the i5 otherwise its just not worth it...

One of the reasons I didn't upgrade to Quad Core was due to i7....and now i5?! WTF? And it isn't even backwards compatible?

No it isn't... The new Core i5 & i7 are not backward or cross compatible. That's the only disadvantage over whatever Intel was previously churning out. i7 will remain high end with i5's the mainstream. Stick to a cheapo Core 2 upgrade now, forget quad etc. and go for i5 later if you're not interested in the i7. I told you so...

but amd is much better than intel in the upgrading ..you know am2+ socket can run am2\am+\am3 so if you have old am2 or am2+ you can always upgrade it with am3 cpu...but inte lga 775 socket is dying ..i read that they are waiting till core 2.. cpus be out of stock and then push the core i5..:stare:

Core 2 is far from dying... I don't think the end for Core 2 is anywhere near. If i5's are priced extremely well, yes, that may be a selling point. But if that's the case, then who needs the Core 2's? :-)

but i don`t think they would price the core i5 well because there is too many of core 2.. in the market ..so i think the well price it higher than core 2..but lower than core i7..:dozey:

or if intel is thinking right they sould price most of core i5 better than core 2.. ,and i wanted to say something .if intel want to kill:leer: amd the sould have made the core i5 compatiable with one of these sockets lga775 ..or lga 1366 ..this way they will take the advantage on amd (faster cpus.and easy upgrade)..:leer:

Is it worth to pay extra USD68 for additional 170MHz speed??
FYI,I'm not OC user.My daily activity are YM,win media player, palying NFS: Most Wanted and Warcraft III.

Then don't buy it, just go for the E8400, it's much better. Or any entry level Quad Core would do. Even my aging P4 EE 3.46Ghz can run those things at max specs.

USD 68 for a cooler? A Zalman, a really good one. The OCZ Vendetta is USD 35 to 45. Check out Amazon.com for prices, they're cheap.

..i say go with phenom ii x4 955 it gives the same performance and it can upgrade ..you know am3 a new socket but q9550 old one and they aren`t going to make any more of lga 775 cpus nor motherboards...you can get the q9550 in some cases one of them you have the board you just upgrade your cpu ..or you intend to go for i7 or i5 later but i say x4 955 still very good and the cpu can run ddr2 or ddr3 so you aren`t stuck with one type of memory as i saw there is no longer ddr3 boards for lga 775 cpu in my country and many other .....
