I am getting extremely slow network performance from yesterday, and all of a sudden. I am connecting to a WinXP machine, the file transfer is slow, accessing files and folders is relatively fast but there is some slight stutter while exploring, right clicking takes a while, and accessing it via remote desktop software UltraVNC is slow as well.

I don't know what happened. I have restarted both the computers. I checked all my NIC settings. I can access it fine via another PC running Vista. So it is a problem on my end. I am fairly sure it is not my NIC. Internet/Downloading is fine. It's just the damn network. I haven't changed anything.

So far i have tried:
- Restart both PCs.
- Restarting modem
- Uninstalling - Reinstalling NIC (this is not the problem because i am facing the problem with both NIC and wireless)
- Disabling Autotuning, and Remote Differential Compression

Please help! How can something break without even doing anything to it! Argh, stupid Windows!

you sure you didn't somehow end up with Vista? cuz that sounds like a Vista issue! you sure you checked all the settings in the device manager/driver section/s? Perhaps a particular software, often antivirus or security application will cause a slow down

Um...it's working...now. Suddenly. Without me doing anything. Win 7 surely is moody. Now stay that way, you!

@Ss- I did check everything. Disabled Nod, firewall, router firewall. Hell, even UPnP. Nothing worked. But apparently, as we found out later on, you do nothing to make it work.

Ok no...weird. It was working fine, till i opened UltraVNC. Now it's back to being slow. Hmm...

Edit:
Deleted UltraVNC. Now accessing files and folders, which were fast enough, are slow too! Everything even is slower! Wtf is going on...

perhaps not everything from UltraVNC was deleted. Maybe need to remove registry links, etc..?

I use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall programs. It cleans registry and left over files/folders. I don't think its UltraVNC either. Something worked...then it had a change of heart. This is seriously weird.

you know what, that was not very smart. Never use a registry/component install editor on a version of windows that has not officially been released yet.

Uh, what? It cleans registry links, files and folders of an uninstalled program. Just like doing a clean install of your graphics card drivers. It's safe. Been using on Vista and Win 7 from the beginning. Never had a problem.

Anyway, that's certainly not the problem. Help!

Could be an actual Windows7 problem/bug. I have a similar issue with Wifi on Vista, it's extremely slow yet none of the fixes I have found via google or Microsoft's knowledge base has solved or helped fix this!

Hmm. But how could the bug just suddenly be triggered? It was fine just yesterday...weird.

new windows = new registry structure, which gets ****ed by programs designed for older windows versions. Can't believe you didn't at least guess that.

Well, it is Vista compatible. Should be fine for Win 7 too. And it is, for me and for plenty of other people. I really don't think it caused any problems.

Update on my problem:
It's the bloody router. I think. I have 3 pcs connected to it. Mine, the XP machine and my bros. Now, if i remove the lan wire of my bros pc from the router, the network access becomes normal! If i plug it back in, it becomes slow again. It does not matter if my bros PC is turned on or not. Just the presence of a 3rd lan wire complicates my connection. I have tried this 4-5 times.

So is it the router? I would say yes, but my brother has no such problem. He can access and view files normally. So it's a combination of Win 7 and my router that's creating the problem. Maybe you guys have an idea?

Maybe it's just his NIC thats flooding the rest of the network with packets?

Umm, even if it's turned off? I posted that message at around 3am, he was sound asleep by then, his PC turned off.

The thing is...it didn't happen before. It broke without any reason!

I think there might be problem in your router, check the connection and try out to ping it.

I want to go back to my old router. This is the one:
USRobotics Support: Model 9106 - 9106: Middle East and North Africa

Will it work with the Fiber crap Etisults have installed?

Yes, try using your old router w/ the FTTH router.

1) Connect your old router to the FTTH router tru their 1st socket.
2) Configure your router to bridge the connection. (disable ppoe/ppoa)
3) Plug your PCs on your old router.

* This is not the perfect solution to your problem. But this will probably work.
