While I dislike Oprah's show, I do agree with the interview. The doctor in the video is talking about UAE residents, meaning locals, she is talking about how she and other locals live in this country.

This country was made for locals, and the government will continue to support the real residents in this country, you are here on behalf of the government and your almost expired visa, mostly everyone on this forum is en expat and the UAE is mostly consisted of expats.

The government doesn't give a shit about us, and it's their right to do so. This is not our country and nor has it ever been.

You're a genius DS. You think I don't know all that? My point is, its a misleading show. Residents aren't locals, citizens are. And we're residents. But the morons who watch Oprah are made to believe electricity and water are free for everyone. Then there's the BS she gives about the abaya being 'cultural'. What a retard. And no one younger than 60 wears an Abaya? Guess she's never been to ZU, or ECMIT, etc. Or MOE for that matter. LOL firstly, the reason it is called a resident visa is because everyone who has it or is a citizen of this country is a RESIDENT! As long as you have such a visa or living as a citizen in a country, you are a resident! So the interview was a lie, a jokingly misleading lie! I bet Oprah got/will get a lot of criticism for this naiive little interview of hers! If ever there was a sell-out moment for Oprah, this is it!

Better yet, the mena region is getting visibility because of its expats... and the mix culture that's got this place going..

lol the funny thing about the local "mentality" is they don't want the expats here, make many attempts to turn it into an inhospitable place to live and meanwhile they don't want to do the dirty work themselves!

Dubai has no future until the locals start cleaning the streets and collecting garbage and I mean literally, not figuratively! If the locals won't do the work and don't want expats, then this place will turn back into the 1950-1960s again and people like Intel_P4 will be trying to find cheap labor employment in Iran or India or die of starvation! That's the REAL old Dubai!

Locals just have to face it, they can't have it the way it used to be in the 90s, they need expats to actually make any money! This country was built on oil and the hard work of others, with Dubai, if you take the oil and hard work out, you get death :tongue2:

Well I don't know which dubai I miss. I miss the olds days. Also its good that Dubai is moving forward with promoting itself as well.

word. Look at all the other countries outside the Gulf Countries, and you'll see that the locals are barbers, garbage collectors, cleaners. I think out of all the Gulf Countries only Omanis do these kind of jobs ( oxide should know better).

Well the way things are now is going well I mean when I go to the US and I get asked where I'm from they will point out a major landmark from here which means its good that Dubai is getting some attention and that its alive. I honestly don't want people to think that we do not want more but its getting a bit crowded:S

well i think Saudi and Oman are different, you do see locals working certain labor intensive jobs there due to the larger populations meaning less wealth to go around.

its getting crowded because your infrastructure is wrong. the planning of the city is messed up and often shortsighted. the government brings in "experts" and applies examples from other countries rather than adapting the examples to fit the country. Your country will always be this way unless you 1) get locals to do some REAL work in the government rather than relying on examples that don't work and 2) give expats a reason to care. Your typical expat wants to make money and leave and that means he/she is only invested in this country for his/her few years in the country. This is why you see some immigrants in other countries contributing positively because it's now their country too.

Until then your fellow locals who barely work and make 5 times the normal going salary are the what's slowing the country down. Dubai should have learned from the economic crisis because there are lessons to be learned. I don't think they have learned anything at all except convict fraud, which they didn't care about when the money was rolling in.
